Cooking with Regina Open Door Society
Part of increasing food security in Regina is reaching those who are newcomers to our city and helping to facilitate their knowledge in the kitchen. Some of the equipment, appliances and ingredients we have in Canada are very different than what is used in other parts of the world! Imagine trying to cook with ingredients that you have never seen before! How comfortable would you be preparing a meal for yourself or your family?
To help educate newcomers to Regina, REACH has partnered with the Open Door Society and the Early Years Family Centre to offer cooking classes. In these classes we focus on how to prepare simple, affordable and healthy recipes using common ingredients. The people in this cooking group were among the most courageous and kind individuals I have had the pleasure of cooking with! At times when there was a language barrier we were still able to communicate with the universal language of cooking.
The group's favourite recipes included: Whole Wheat Pizza, No-Butter Chicken, and Cheddar Cornmeal Muffins! Great job to all who participated!
