Food Costs

Happy New Year! Did you catch us on the news yesterday? REACH's Executive Director, Dana Folkersen, was on CBC Radio's Morning Edition and on the CBC Regina TV News at 6 p.m yesterday. She was on to discuss the rising cost of produce.  If you missed it, check out the article that CBC posted here.

Time for School Lunches

Now that school is back in session, it's time to start thinking about great litter-less lunch ideas for the kids!   By packing a litter-less lunch, you can save money as well as incorporate important nutrients into your child's lunch.  Focus on fruits, veggies, whole grains, low-fat dairy and low-fat meat or alternatives to make a quick, healthy and affordable lunch for your child!

North Central Health Fair

Come on out to the North Central Health Fair happening from 11am - 2pm on Tuesday, August 19th, just outside the Albert Scott Community Centre at 1264 Athol St.  The fair is a fun event for the whole family and includes live entertainment, a kids play area and a free BBQ lunch!  There will be a diabetes screening area as well as lots of fun, interactive booths to check out.   Visit us at the REACH booth for a sample of something delicious too!

Cooking with Regina Open Door Society

Part of increasing food security in Regina is reaching those who are newcomers to our city and helping to facilitate their knowledge in the kitchen.   Some of the equipment, appliances and ingredients we have in Canada are very different than what is used in other parts of the world!   Imagine trying to cook with ingredients that you have never seen before!  How comfortable would you be preparing a meal for yourself or your family?

To help educate newcomers to Regina, REACH has partnered with the Open Door Society and the Early Years Family Centre to offer cooking classes.  In these classes we focus on how to prepare simple, affordable and healthy recipes using common ingredients.   The people in this cooking group were among the most courageous and kind individuals I have had the pleasure of cooking with!    At times when there was a language barrier we were still able to communicate with the universal language of cooking.

The group's favourite recipes included:   Whole Wheat Pizza, No-Butter Chicken, and Cheddar Cornmeal Muffins!   Great job to all who participated!

Pizza Party Time!

On Monday, June 16th REACH celebrated the winners of the Litter-less lunch contest by throwing a PIZZA PARTY!  A big congratulations to St. Catherine's grade 8 class for winning the Litter-less lunch contest!   The group made their own healthy whole wheat pizza dough and got to customize their pizza toppings.   The pizza was served with a delicious Caesar salad and of course the whole lunch was Litter-less too!
